A Twenty Year History
These extracts are taken from the Bulletin of the Ursulines of the Roman Union from

"It often happens that we become aware of some gifts received from God not at
the time we are actually enjoying them, but later on, when we stop to re-read their
And this is exactly what happened to us in this twentieth anniversary of our 'birth'.
In 1983, we were a group of people with two things in common" we were the
parents of boys and girls who attended school at the Ursuline Sisters' convent,
and our experience of Christian life was a somewhat "traditional" one.
Gradually we were drawn in by the sisters to spiritual and formative meetings; they even asked us to collaborate in a
specific way with them in some school initiatives. This gave rise to the prayer meetings of the 'mums' on Wednesday
mornings, and those of the 'dads' on Thursday nights. We were also involved in the Renewal prayer on Monday nights,
in the organisation of bazaars to finance school activities and to plan festivities for Christmas and the end of the
In the meantime we were led more and more to know and love Saint Angela and her teachings.
Finally, and almost without noticing it, we became aware, about 1983, that our meeting together was not only a
question of friendship, or empathy, or of pleasure in helping the sisters, but something more : it was gift of the Lord ;
the 'Friends of Saint Angela'.
And at Easter 1984 we write : 'Some months ago, on an October Sunday in 1983, we performed an act of consecration
: we committed our lives to Jesus. We did not know exactly what we wanted to do with our lives, and even less what
the Lord was asking from us ; without any statutes, any rules, any commitment to subscribe, we threw ourselves
blindly into the most loving arms of God.
Since then winter has slipped away ; the seed which had been sown then has had time enough to melt our sorrows,
our doubts and perplexities as well as our dreams, fancies and desires.
Everything that was ours has dissolved, and the Lord, during this unforgettable Lent, has judged that it was time for
him to take up the reins of our group with a strong hand, showing us, week after week, the path we should walk and
giving us our rule for that wonderful Easter season of 1984.
Everything has begun through Mary's intercession ; leading us from the beginning, she revealed to us our mission :
To be Makers of Peace
always conforming our life to the life of Jesus'.
In order to walk along this path, we were shown the necessary means:
Reconciliation - Prayer - Fasting and Mortification - Eucharist Adoration
It's a way to grow which will enable us to be 'makers of peace', and this is expressed in our daily lives by such
Humility - Brotherly love - Pardon - Service - Obedience - Purity of heart - Poverty
It was for us a great joy, and also a source of comfort to 'discover' that the General Chapter 2001 gave us a message
on the same lines, indeed with the same words. The same invitation was repeated to us, an invitation
<to become more and more MAKERS OF PEACE in justice, solidarity and harmony in us and between us, in our
community life, in prayer and in mission following Saint Angela, pilgrim of peace and of reconciliation ?..>
We thank the Lord who has thus confirmed our mission to us, and we ask for the gift of His Spirit so that he may make
of us, and more and more, docile instruments of His infinite Love."
